The director Mike Nichols confirmed on Wednesday that he would mount a Broadway revival of ?Death of a Salesman? next fall starring Philip Seymour Hoffman as Willy Loman and Linda Emond as Linda Loman.
Mr. Hoffman, an Academy Award winner for ?Capote? and a Tony Award nominee for ?True West? and ?Long Day?s Journey Into Night,? has been eager to play Willy for some time, Mr. Nichols said in a telephone interview, and the two men have been making plans for a production for months. For Linda they both wanted Ms. Emond, who is perhaps best known for her multiple-award-winning performance as the Homebody in New York Theater Workshop?s 2001 production of Tony Kushner?s ?Homebody/Kabul.?
Mr. Nichols and Mr. Hoffman previously collaborated on the 2001 Central Park production of ?The Seagull,? which drew mixed reviews.
Mr. Hoffman is 43, on the young side for Willy, who is in his 60s for much of the play though he appears at earlier ages in flashbacks and memories. The last Willy on Broadway, Brian Dennehy, was 60 when that 1999 revival began. But Dustin Hoffman was 47 when he played the role on Broadway in 1984, and the original Willy, Lee J. Cobb, was 37 when he opened at the Morosco Theater on Feb. 10, 1949. (Ms. Emond, for her part, is 51.)
?Willy is different ages over the course of the play ? young, middle-aged, old ? but what matters is finding the right man to play the part,? said Mr. Nichols, an Oscar winner for ?The Graduate? and multiple Tony winner as best director from ?Barefoot in the Park? in 1964 to ?Spamalot? in 2005. ?I?m thrilled to be doing this with Phil.?
Mr. Nichols said there were no plans right now for an out-of-town tryout, and no performance dates and theater to disclose beyond the intention to open next fall. The New York Post reported in September that Mr. Nichols and Mr. Hoffman were planning to do the revival next year.
