Fueled by a strong out-of-the-gate performance, Universal Studios Home Entertainment’s Despicable Me easily topped the national home video sales charts its first week in stores.
The animated hit generated $25 million in revenue on Dec. 14, its first day of release, according to Universal. That figure takes into account Blu-ray Disc and DVD sales as well as digital downloads.
Despicable Me bumped the previous week’s top seller, Warner’s Inception, to No. 2 on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart and the research house’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart. Despicable Me generated 29% of its first-week unit sales from the Blu-ray Disc edition, a high percentage for a family title.
Three other new releases with significant theatrical tracks records came out last week. 20th Century Fox’s The A-Team, a remake of the 1980s TV show that grossed $77.2 million in U.S. theaters, debuted at No. 4 on First Alert, right behind Summit’s Eclipse, and No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart. Sony Pictures’ The Other Guys, the latest Will Ferrell comedy, bowed at No. 5 on First Alert and No. 4 on the Blu-ray Disc chart. And Warner’s The Town, a crime drama starring Ben Affleck that grossed $91.9 million in theaters, debuted at No. 8 on First Alert and No. 5 on the Blu-ray Disc chart.
On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week ending Dec. 19, The Other Guys debuted at No. 1, benefiting from the lack of a rental window to Redbox. The other new releases are being withheld from Redbox as well as Netflix until Jan. 11, 2011. Based solely on rentals through Blockbuster and other brick-and-mortar stores, Despicable Me debuted at No. 17 and The A-Team bowed at No. 18.
